Very interesting. Alan went to a one-year lineman program, is very dedicated to his job and learning and challenging himself, now is line superintendent for the REC. I have a four year degree–haven’t done anything with it. No debt, though, as we paid as we were going to school. My bro has lots of debt from school (ISU), never graduated, now owns his own business. I don’t think a person should go to school just to go to school. Wait until you know what you want to do. . .if you want to be a nurse, yes, you’ll need the credentials. But there are a lot of things you can educate yourself in preparation for without all the debt. It’ll be interesting to see how things change in upcoming years. . .

from my experience, i got a degree in dance. seriously, it’s listed as the #5 most useless degree you can earn. did i need it to do the job i am doing right now? heavens no. my fiance, though, is a different story. he’s an accountant, and without his degree, masters degree and cpa he wouldn’t be allowed to do his job by requirement of the state. accounting is something he really enjoys, so he would tell you that yes it is necessary if you’re going to look at a very specific occupation which requires certifications and items of the like. i don’t know how i feel about how i’ll approach this topic with my children in the future. i want them to decide, but i also want them to understand there are millions of people out there who don’t have a degree and have been equally, and sometimes even more, successful than those with one. i think a college degree has become the new bare minimum in society in order to make ends meet, and that’s unfortunate for a lot of people.
